the species
only some of them bite
As of now, there are 4 types of playable species on Parcae Nervi. More species will eventually be unlocked (and that'll be up to the players!). But anyway, the categories consist of Humans, Vampires, Werewolves, and Fair Folk. Keep in mind the current state of the world when creating characters--humans are generally seen as the "superior" race in this world, as they have the most dominant influence due to vastly outranking the other creatures in political power, population density, and wealth. Humans tend to view the other races as lesser beings and it's common word of mouth to call one of them a "downworlder."
Humans: Centuries of humans have survived with magic at their sides. They were the first creatures to abandon hunter-gatherer societies in favor of agriculture, and as one thing led to another, they quickly advanced from a societal/civilization standpoint. They invented weaponry that easily took down any adversaries, built transportation to bring them and their belongings over great distances. Their population increased dramatically and pretty soon, they began pushing on the boundaries of their largest adversaries: the Fair Folk.
While humans continued to walk down the road of innovation and attempted to incorporate magic into the vision of their New World, the Fair Folk saw it as an injustice to the magic that the earth so kindly gifts them. Battles and skirmishes went on for quite some time between the two races, but the humans were already so overwhelmingly powerful that the Fair Folk decided it would be best if they did right by themselves and left the humans to their own destruction. Chaos Theory and all that.
So today modern humans have more or less learned to balance technology with magic. As of now, there is still quite a bit of tension occurring between them and the Fair Folk. Werewolves and Vampires are generally treated in the same inferior manner, but many humans fear them simply because lycanthropy and vampirism are seen as viruses.
Werewolves: Lycanthropy is spread when a human is scratched. The first Change occurs during the first full moon that occurs after a human has been scratched. The Change is what the wolven use to refer to their transition from human to wolf.
The human body is typically not affected aesthetically/physically by the infection; a pale, skinny sack of bones of a kid will still resemble a skinny sack of bones even after he's been scratched. He won't magically gain fifty pounds of muscle, but he will get heightened reflexes and senses. Wolven have a strong sense of smell and hearing, but their eyesight typically doesn't change, nor does their sense of touch.
Their psyche, however, changes drastically. Humans will find themselves angrier, hungrier, and a heck of a lot meaner due to normal brain patterns rewiring themselves to better suit the Other Self that's waiting to burst from their skin. Wolven are more prone to stress and anxiety during the first few months of being scratched and will quickly begin to seek out other wolven in the area. They are naturally drawn towards a pack and most wolven end up with the first pack that will accept them.
At this point, the wolven are still considered pups and are generally regarded as children, no matter their age, by the pack. They usually can't control the Change, which is brought on by a rush of endorphins, in most cases occurring due to anger or fear similar to a fight-or-flight response.
The Change brings out the Other and a werewolf in full form is a force to be reckoned with. They are bipedal creatures with arms that are 3/4 the length of their bodies, which allow them to run on all fours when need be. Their hands are massive and from them lengthen claws that are typically 3-4 inches long; they are used as their main tools when in combat with an enemy. While they range in size, most of them reach well over six feet tall and are generally covered from head to toe in rough, course fur (the color is generally reflected by their natural human hair color). The shape of their heads is similar to wolves, but their snouts are broader and their cuspids are longer and sharper than average.
Most wolven can eventually learn to control the Change and learn to keep their human identity/mindset while in the Other. This takes grueling training and a lot of guidance from more experienced wolven, which is why it is safer when a new wolven pup is taken in by a pack. While wolven can learn to control the Change, they must always shift during a full moon. The full moon is when their animal instincts are at their strongest and in most cases, packs will plan excursions together far away from human civilization where they won't endanger anyone.
Werewolves do not practice magic.
Werewolves CAN procreate. Male offspring have a 75% and female offspring have a 30% chance of becoming lycanthrope. If both parents are lycanthropes, the offspring automatically inherits the lycanthrope genes. The first Change occurs during puberty.
Vampires: Vampirism is spread when a human is bitten by a vampire and the vampire does not feed. If a human is bitten by a vampire and the vampire drains blood from the vein, the poison that had initially been released into the bite is drained alongside the blood.
Vampires are creatures of the night. Contact with direct sunlight is lethal to them, although there are witches who will charge hefty sums to create "reflection rings" for vampires that allow them to walk during the day. However, being in the sun still drains their energy and weakens their senses, while simultaneously increasing their thirst and need to feed. Garlic is a common defense mechanism against them and burns their skin on contact, but Holy Water has no effect. Any manner of destroying their heart will kill them, whether it's by wooden stake, surgical removal, or yanking their heart from their chests with your bare hands. Yeah.
They need human blood to survive. Generally, they need to feed every few days. Exceptions occur when they become injured--the effects of blood loss are immediate, but regeneration/healing broken bones can also quicken the effects of the thirst.
Their health regenerates astoundingly fast--minor cuts and scratches will take only minutes to heal, while a broken bone could take an hour (granted, severe cases would take longer). To a certain extent, enough damage to their bodies could kill them, but this would be due to the thirst and not the damages themselves.
Newly bitten vampires are called fledglings and usually form strong emotional bonds to their creators. It is uncommon for a creator to make a vampire and leave it on its own. During the first few months of being a vampire, fledglings will struggle with the thirst. The thirst is a sort of burning that happens at the back of a throat and won't go away until a vampire has fed. When vampires refuse to feed, the thirst worsens and they become unstable.
Think general vampire stuff, people.
Vampires do not practice magic.
Vampires can not procreate.
Fair Folk: Back when the humans and the Fair Folk coexisted in peace, there existed the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. However, the monarchies toppled during the rebellions in the 18th century. The two courts needed each other more than ever, but the losses from the humans proved too great for the proud race. They are currently now disbanded, lacking in a leader as no heir to either throne exists, nor will anyone dare step up to the challenge in the event that the humans may see it as a threat.
Fair Folk are perhaps the most peculiar looking of the intelligent races. They resemble the average human except a majority of them have beastlike qualities--one may have the antlers of a deer, while another may have the hind legs of a wolf. Sometimes they have multiple types of beast aspects (ex; a female with the head of a tiger and the wings of a bat). They usually have slimmer limbs, long faces with high cheek bones, and big, expressive eyes. Their skin color varies, but can be pigmented in any shade on the color spectrum. The physical differences between the two courts still linger--some Fair Folk have darker skin and more predator-like beast aspects, and these people have been linked back to the Unseelie Court. The Seelie Court descendants have lighter complexions and more prey-like beast aspects.
They are extremely vulnerable to iron--being close to large amounts of it makes them feel physically sick and touching it burns them. The Fair Folk in New York, however, are slowly beginning to grow immune to the effects of iron.
Fair Folk are well-versed in the use of magic. They don't study magic classes like the humans do so they learn a wider range of magic. Because of their connection with the earth, they are naturally stronger than most humans and can use more powerful spells, hold onto magic longer, etc.
