Magic is a tricky little thing, borne of the Earth’s aura, but adaptable to even the most technologically advanced settlements. New York is a prime example of what happens when you mix the big city with the old ways. While Manhattan decided early on to abandon the ventures of magic and turn towards a more technological foundation, Queens was founded and built up by generations of powerful mages. The magic is undoubtedly strongest in Queens, which puts the large population of downworlders that reside in Brooklyn on edge. Tensions between residents of Queens and Brooklyn are higher than ever and gang violence is back on the rise.

In New York, a city is not always just a city. Sometimes, it's two cities. But while one is vibrant and full of life and its inhabitants are mostly welcoming (in their own, angry way), the other is a cesspit of century-old anger that has festered since the city's founding.
While the citizens of this city clash in the Above, the fair folk who make their home in the Underground have banded together through desperation and an anguished shared history. Oh, there's plenty of internecine conflict to be had, but Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here, because the fair folk know only one true enemy, and they are you. The Blighters

Apps that sniff out good enchantments from bad are downloaded on smartphones, wealthy land holders hire a certain type of groundskeeper to help ward off unwanted guests, but the rich and the pompous see magic as merely a tool that can be bought. Unlike Manhattan, the Queens borough was settled and constructed with the use of magic. Many powerful magic users from strong namesakes are born here, as the borough still overflows with magic. The citizens respect the magic that makes up their city, and so their city returns their respects—slanderous graffiti littering the sides of buildings is magically wiped clean within the hour, trash and grime that line the busy roadsides disappears with the blink of an eye, and pickpockets targeting innocents suddenly find cuffs around their wrists and a police officer around the corner. However, the air in the city has become tense. With the constant friction between the downworlders, a type of magic folk in their own right, the city isn’t sure where it sides.

Rundown buildings and shady areas make up most of Brooklyn. Step foot on the wrong street at night when the monsters come out to play and you may just never see sunlight again. Brooklyn’s population is made heavily of downworlders—vampires, werewolves, and the occasional fae. Humans with little to no magic skills, although still not entirely safe, still populate some parts of the area and make their livings working through the day and shuttering themselves in at night with garlic strung up on their doors and silver bullets ready in their handguns. The vampires and werewolves are a peaceful people, but have been slandered and made monsters out of throughout the ages. Peace rallies calling for equality parade down the streets and into Queens, but underneath it all, blood is still being shed.
